- July 31-August 2, 2010: BioBlitz – Hymenoptera
Acadia National Park’s BioBlitz 2010 will take place July 31-August 2 at the Schoodic Education and Research Center campus. This year, professional entomologists, local naturalists, park staff, and other volunteers will be collecting and identifying bees, wasps, and ants. The registration period for the weekend-long event has already passed, but if you are still interested in taking part in the annual rush to assess Acadia NP’s insect biodiversity, join us for a free, public workshop on Sunday, August 1, from 10 AM to 12 PM. Led by former University of Maine entomology professor, Cassie Gibbs, and Maine entomologist, Marcia Siebenmann, this workshop will teach participants about the habitats, life histories, and importance of these insects (they do more than the occasional bite or sting!). Workshop participants will also have the opportunity to join instructors in the field to collect specimens from trees and grass. Instructors will also show participants how to use microscopes to examine the insects they have collected. All equipment (other than your walking shoes and sunblock!) is provided and no previous experience is necessary! To RSVP for the event, please contact June Devisfruto at 207-288-1316 or june_devisfruto@nps.gov. For more information contact David Manski at 207-288-8720 or david_manski@nps.gov.
